About The Blog

This blog is all about spiral steroids. In 2018,  IOMA discovered spiral steroids. These compounds are unique in many ways:

  • First, they are all phosphoethanolamine or phosphocholine steroid esters.

  • Second, all of the spiral steroids have more than 21 carbon atoms in the steroid.

  • Third, the extra carbons form a spiral steroid lactone in ring E. The lactone ring is shared with spironolactone and cardiotonic steroids, including digoxin and ouabain.

  • Fourth, based on the similarity in structure to spironolactone and cardiotonic steroids, we propose that spiral steroids are potassium sparing hormones.

The purpose of this Blog is to share data about the spiral steroids, including structure, biosynthesis and function.

It is our belief that these compounds play central role in regulation of electrolytes, specifically potassium.

The lead compound is Ionotropin with 23 carbon atoms. Thus far, we have identified spiral steroids with 23, 24 and 25 carbon atoms. However, we have yet to learn, if all phosphocholine steroid esters have a similar function.
